 Media Department Highlights

Each year, thousands of applicants are turned away, due to limited space in the school and clinic. Those that are accepted are forced to work with outdated, broken, and mostly non-functional equipment and supplies. The library was gutted by fire, and now has NO books. The clinic has a single sterilizer. Due to HIV/AIDS, TB, and other blood-borne diseases, sterilization is mandatory. If this unit fails, which it is likely to do, the clinic MUST be shut down. One clinic, with only a single room, serves 30,500 people. Many are turned away each day, due to the lack of equipment and supplies. Occasionally, surgeries must be performed without anesthesia. Technicians must lean over broken chairs, without hydraulics, often resulting in daily back pain. Despite these frustrations and limitations, the faculty and students try their best to provide quality dental services to the people of Zambia, and the surrounding nations.

This is the school Library. Two years ago, it was gutted by fire. It still has not been fully repaired or restocked. These are the book shelves in the Library. There are no books. None. And there are no books in Zambia to buy. Students simply go without. Out of 12 chairs, only 1 is functional. On the others, the hydrolics and chair-side tools do not work. Technicians can't perform many services.

There is only 1 sterilizer for the entire clinic. Patients must wait while the limited number of tools can be sterilized. If it fails, the clinic will have to be shut down. The Laboratory has old, outdated, and non-functioning equipment. This severely impacts the number of patients that can be treated each day. This 1 school serves 5 countries. Thousands of qualified students apply, and last year, only 15 were accepted due to the lack of space and resources

How You Can Help

• Donate your old dental suites, chairs, laboratory equipment, and supplies.

• Encourage your Alma Mater to donate their old library books, research materials, and dental equipment or supplies.

• Provide funding either for specific projects or general needs.

• Consider a 2 week working vacation. One week providing service to the local school and clinic, and 1 week enjoying scenic Africa.

• Spread the word to your colleagues, friends, and family.

If you are considering donating equipment or supplies, please contact us immediately. We are shipping a container to Zambia in October, 2007
